Fashion with hygge
From August 6-9, Copenhagen Fashion Week made good on its promises once again, offering us a wealth of inspiration for this coming fall and next summer. After fashion weeks were cancelled in Oslo and Stockholm for environmental reasons, all the spotlights were on the Danish capital (please forgive us, Greta Thunberg!) where we from Vanessa Wu gathered to spot the latest trends to wow us.
The world’s beautiful people flocked to Copenhagen for this unmissable date in the fashion calendar. Scandi-cool is to fashion what the croissant is to the Parisian breakfast: a must-have! But what exactly is Scandi-cool? Once known for their minimalist design, Nordic designers are now at the forefront of the colorful maximalist revolution. XXL looks effortlessly mix super long and super wide proportions; contrasting shapes, fabrics and prints are everywhere; and from plastic bucket hats to velvet headbands, those quirky accessories you thought had been banished for good suddenly look super fashionable on these Scandinavian girls!
Seeing this crowd of cool kids in vibrant colors reminds us that when it comes to mix & match styling, the possibilities are endless. Here, a princess dress with puff sleeves is worn with technicolor dad shoes; there, black cycling shorts are paired with a structured jacket and strappy, white, heeled sandals. Tie-dye alongside tartan is just one of the surprising combinations on show. Meanwhile, houndstooth is making a spectacular comeback in various shades of red. Cowboy boots look great with a pink babydoll dress, while strappy sandals are an unexpected complement to oversized suit pants. As for Velcro dad sandals (the next incarnation of the ugly shoes trend), teaming them with a breezy dress will give you that timeless Roman silhouette, or throw them on with a pajama suit for a comfy look, if that’s your thing!
The fashion trend drawing the most attention, however, has to be the blazer, and all the influencers are rocking the oversized version. Beige is back in the spotlight, but notice how a range of pastel colors will also work for this iconic jacket. It can be worn with a printed dress and slingback heels or with ankle grazer jeans and a pair of Vanessa Wu’s thin-heeled, bejeweled mules. For a dressy look, we’d pair it with a straight fit pant in the same color and a pair of square-toe, heeled mules. Slip a clutch under your arm (preferably Bottega Veneta’s The Pouch), throw on a bucket hat and sunglasses with a rhinestone chain, and you'll be at the height of Scandi style without a doubt. Why wait till next summer?
